Making a Deck
« on: July 25, 2010, 12:39:34 PM »
So how does everyone make their decks?

I plan mine usually having around 24 lands and then go with a theme/combo and try to stick with it. If you choose themes/combos care to explain them? I have a zombie (creature), Life loss (combo), control (counter/bounce/steal), soldier (creature)

I know maudy takes the ones with art by john something and anything else that looked cool.

20 / 20 / 20

Lands / Creatures / Others

Unless I'm going for something in particular re: Deck Theme...  For example...  My Angel deck sits around 15L / 30C / 15O, because some of the Others are things like Urza's Incubator (Choose a Creature Type, all creatures of that type cost 3-Unaligned Mana less)...  To get those big Angels out for Less cost in Land Taps...  As well as having a few Battery-Lands that store Mana over turns as counters.

...art by john something and anything else that looked cool.

Raymond Swanland. And Incidentally that also pretty much sums up any form of strategy I have as well; "anything that looked cool" :P hahaha

Are they standard?

My Magic Decks are either sitting on a Boat in a Crate on their way here now...  Or they're waiting on the Docks in Melbourne for said boat...  When they arrive, I'll pick out the name of the lands for you...

I don't know what you mean by "Standard", and if you are referring to  the current range of Magic, then no...  As I gave up competitive Magic play when they introduced "Indestructable" in the Mirrodin saga...  Until then, I had a wonderful all-brown Artifact deck, made the good old fasioned way - but by then, they'd changed Artifacts to something so damn common, I couldn't be bothered keeping up anymore...  I buy the odd booster here and there, but nothing serious.

I bought a Booster Box of Apocalypse back in the day, and had a ton of Invasion for Multicolour, but I sold all my spare cards before I left, and I'm left with just a few select decks now...

Well Ive started creating decks from my new cards, have recently collected Core2012 and latest Innistrad expansion.

I create decks 22 land / 18 creatures / 20 spells.

I do prefer themes and so currently have assembled a black vampire deck and a black zombie deck.

Innistrad is very gothic and so I can create a red/black vampire deck or green/red werewolf deck.

Though as a side note, my werewolves were useless against Murray's red dragon deck.

hahaha yes, but on the same note, I couldn't do jack against your vamps. Though, not being able to snag a land card before you reduced me to 0 life prob didn't help! XD

step 1: pull out my box of assorted MTG cards.

step 2: pick a few cool cards from 1-2 colours and try to build a rough strategy around them.

step 3: after about two hours of looking through piles of cards and picking cool ones, i realise that the deck i am making has roughly 1 jillion cards in it.

step 4: begin taking cards back out of the deck, until it reaches a reasonable size.

step 5: set deck aside, clean up the cards inhabiting 50-75% of the floor space in my room.

I'm sorry.
It doesn't matter how many or how good you are.

Sort through my 2012 core and Innistrad cards and choose a theme / or combo etc.

Recreate the deck with Online Magic the Gathering, get my ar..e kicked, modify online deck. Try again, modify, try again. When I think it works then create the deck in real world.

As a side note Online Magic good for learning the rules and how cards work. For example when Flameblast Dragon attacks you can cause additional X mana damage. I have learnt this separate X damage can be used against a separate target and not just anything that chooses to block.
