Battle Challenge #2

Battle Challenge #2

Ok, so I wasn't going to post this till we were ready to start the next one (and the current one had finished) but I think if we can get as much input as possibile before we start this one we might see more people playing!

So here is a rough guide of what I've come up with so far.

Here is a list of games that I've got thus far. I am thinking of either narrowing down the list myself, or having a couple of rounds of voting. Although too much choice can be bad, as was discovered last time.

So here is the list, with the number of people who I know have the rules for said game next to it.

Games List
*Flames of War 4-5
Infinity 0
Warmachine/Hordes - 5+
Firestorm Armada - 1
Unchartered Seas - 2
Malifaux - 5
All Things Zombie - 0
Dark Age - 0
Pulp City - 3
AE-Bounty - 1
Hell Dorado - 0
Anima Tactics - 1

*TBG cannot stock this, which relates to the next bit.

These three games are the most expensive.
Flames of War
Infinity
Warmachine/Hordes

Now I am not sure if we want to stick to small scale skirmish, or just go all out for whatever has the most interest. Personally I would like to stick to smaller scale skirmish stuff, just because it's not too expensive to collect, and can make a good second, third, etc game for someone to play without a massive hit to the pocket.

I am thinking of leaving AE-Bounty out of this challenge, mostly due to it being pretty much the same system used in AE-WW2 and trying something new is fun.

Voting
Round 1 Voting
  • One week voting, gets game list down to 5 games
  • Can vote for two games in initial voting

Round 2 Voting
  • Votes in form of a post
  • Can vote for one game
  • DO NOT vote if you have no intent on participating
  • Votes cannot be changed

Voting may get some revision, but we really don't want people to vote unless they intend on playing. Narrowing down the list will be a good way to get people to really think about what they want to play. We might have 3 rounds of voting just so we can get the final list to 3 games.

Starting Collecting
  • TBG will give a 5% discount to all orders for battle challenge related stuff during the battle challenge¹
  • WDW will give a further 5% rebate on all rulebooks and starter sets purchased for the battle challenge²
  • Players will have from December to Feb to start collecting - though anyone can join in at any time
  • Players may join in at any time, but may miss out on prizes and points
  • We do not want pirated copies of rules. This means no PDFs. The exception is if the developer offers a PDF copy and you purchased them directly. In which case they MUST be printed off. We do not encourage one person buying the pdf then sharing it around. This isn't in the spirit of the who challenge. The idea is to try something new and have fun as a community, but also show some support for smaller companies. Stealing their rules isn't good support.
¹This will not be avaliable if TBG cannot stock a game (e.g. Flames of War)
²Will be automatically offered through TBG, or club will purchase from another source and sell them on to members at 5% cheaper. Includes PDFs and Hardcover.

Points Break Down
Battle Reports - 5pts Each
Playing A Game - 1pt Each
Painting - 5pts for first four miniatures, 4pts thereafter.

Battle Reports Breakdown
  • You can submit up to 2 battle reports per round
  • Each report must be posted on the forums (there will be a batrep board)
  • Must contain at least 3 photos, pictures, diagrams, etc of the game
  • Must be a report for the game being played in the challenge :P

Painting Points
  • 5pts awarded to the first 4 miniatures you have painted before the end of round 1
  • 4pts for a single miniature (not from the first four) that is painted in round 2 and 3.
  • You will only need 6 painted miniatures to get the full painting points, though we encourage everyone to paint everything :)

Gaming Points
  • You will receive 1pt for every game you play at the club against someone different. (Max 3pts per meet) eg. Playing 3 different people will give you 3pts, 2games against one person will give you 1pt.
  • To recieve these points you must not have played your opponent at that meet
  • You must fill out a log report and sign it with your opponent - see the TO for that meet
  • You must play the game to completion
  • Win or lose, both players recieve the single point if they have no played each other at the current meet.
I am not sure if points should be awarded or not for being absent from a meet.

Prizes
  • Each month everyone participating in the challenge will have the chance to win a $5 TBG voucher
  • Players can only win the $5 voucher once per round
  • At the end of each round everyone participating will have a chance of winning a $15 TBG voucher
Should a game TBG cannot stock wins, we can source vouchers from elsewhere.

Final Prizes
  • Depending on the amount of participants we will have a certain amount of prizes for points at the end
1st - 2+ players
2nd - 6+ players
3rd - 10+ players

This is not a vote.

I think there should be a poll to narrow down the list to about 4 or so games, then people who are willing to play one of those vote for the actual thing. There are a few that i'd like to play, but if its not going to be likely that i'll play one of them then i don't think i'd vote/play.

which is why it is set up this way. for the current battle challenge, less than half those who vote picked up the game

the whole point of the battle challenge is to try something new as a community. the majority of the games played will cost around $100 and give you everything you need to play.

so if your not willing to try something new and not willing to spend a small amount of money, dont vote, its that simple

How many people who voted for AE actually play, or at least have made steps towards having an army, I have my models, just haven't assembled them yet.

Just putting this out there, we could play Fallout Warfare, the rules do come in pdf form, but Black Isle (the company that made the older Fallout games) practically gave it away, and it was available  for free on their website until they closed down.

Not sure if anyone would even want to play it, but if any one is interested, it doesn't have minis (it came with cutout models!) and seems straight forward,
Anyway, heres the link I went thru to get the rules. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/65775/fallout-warfare-officially-free

Aye. I will revise the vvoting tomorrow to reflect that. If we can narrow the list down to 3 or 4 games most ppl are wiklling to try then we should be good for the final round of voting.

What were the games you were interested in btw?

I want this battle challenge to get more love, so feel free to give feedbacvk!

Malifaux for me.

Although when this kicks in, will people still be playing AE?

I'd be interested in Warmachine (cause i already have the rules), Infinity (people at uni keep telling me to play) and Malifaux (cause i liked the look of some of the minis that people linked to)

I am willing to play, what i was saying is that i wont vote if none of those 3 are in the final 4/5. I am willing to try something new, its just that some of the games hold no interest for me.

The rules for Infinity are free download, so it's not as expensive. Well from what I can gather, they'll probably end up being in the top 3-4. :P

The problem with Infinity winning is we need a lot of terrain.

I strongly suggest someone with a printer and a little bit of time get onto WorldWorks, and pick up some of their (current) Building and terrain pieces...  Its cheap, its fairly quick, and its somewhat disposable...

You guys do have a chunk of the appropriate terrain - and you can play on 4x4 boards...

With Infinity being around the 10-model mark for 300 points, its not too bad - your typical "Starter" box will net you around the 150 point mark...

THe problem with infinity (beyond the terrain requirement) is that not a lot of the figures are released...  On top of that, the weapons are fairly specific, and there's virtually no way of getting said weapons to even TRY your own conversions...

BUT, if you're okay with Proxies and stuff like that...  You will not find a more unique game than Infinity...

Being able to Act, but then have your opponent react on the fly as you go, through the ARO system - Its awesome, its dynamic, and it feels more Realistic...

Additionally, Infinity will fit in with a Sci-Fi RPG...  Infinity the game, feels a LOT like the Non-Magic aspects of Shadowrun...

BUUUT.  I'm not Voting.  But I will suggest Positives and Negatives based on my experiences, and help people around problems...

Yes. I'll play it all the time*

*it's the only game I really get to play

Cheers for the feedback Drasnighta. I think infinity might have a stronger following at our club than AE-WW2 does, even though this forum and my store are on the first page for google results for AE-WW2...

There are some games on there I wouldn't really be interested in playing, but thought I might as well list some of the games I know have a following as they might pique interest in people.

i can only thank you for putting anima tactics on the list, and i can only hope some people might consider it. i'll be having an attempt at teaching anyone that's interested the basic rules for the game next meet (i might even bring a friend to help with that), amongst other things (40k, etc).
I'm sorry.
It doesn't matter how many or how good you are.

To add to the discussion, what about games like Epic 40K, Necromunda, Mordheim, Inquisitor, Battlefleet Gothic, etc? I know some of our members frown upon GW stuff, but they are hardly GW games any more, are they?

That said, the minis for Infinity and th adversity of factions for it make the game a good option. Bounty is sweet, and a bit different to AEWWII, too. I'm not a real fan of the Malifaux theme, preferring something less horror oriented.  Warmachine and Hordes are staples for me, so that's a bit of a negative (as you say, new is good!). My personal experience with Uncharted Seas was okay, I just don't think it's my kinda game. It's a little too impersonal. I like the story behind the game.

Pulp City is great and has a really low price point for entry, Hell Dorado has kinda dropped off the radar a bit, and the others I've not seen or heard much of.
Thanks to denial, Carson's no longer immortal.

Being GW, they are expensive. Out of that list I have wanted to make a battlefleet gothic army with a few mates because then we could have some great narrative campaigns. But it is ridiculously expensive, not helped by having to buy it from England.
I have only ever heard good feedback about Necromunda however, although rather then dish out for the larger scale minis I would just play a kill team mission. (With the new rules)

Malifaux is something I will be playing anyway, so I am really hoping that wins. So’mer Teeth fo da winrar!

Only other things I may be interested in would be a space game similar to BFG but it would have to have a LOT of depth and detailed rules to draw me in. As well as a few different teams with many different models and different lists.

Infinity looks good, but I’m not interested in buying up and owning another largish TT game (more in time then models, but you get what I mean) because as it is much of my warhamms are left sitting behind even when I play the game.
