Traitor Guard Ideas
« on: March 15, 2011, 09:07:55 PM »
I'm thinking about playing 40K again, evil guardsmen to be exact, does anyone have any ideas as how this could be best represented?

Step one: Buy IG
Step two: Buy Chaos
Step Three: Mix Them Together
Step four: ?? ??
Step Five: Profit.

Minis is easy, I was thinking of using gor herds for conscripts, but I meant rules wise, having an army of "counts as" feels lame.

Well with guard, you can do really anything, so if you had a rough theme idea, that would help a lot with regards to unit choices.

Righteous has a traitor guard army, and I have a ....well kinda in the middle Penal legion uprising in the midst of a demonic incursion army in the making (even painted a few guys!!1winrar!).

Counts as is your best bet. They don't have a proper codex, plus you have more options with the IG counts as.

What about Lost And The Damned from the Eye Of Terror, can I still use them?

They aren't tourney legal, and I think they'll be pretty broken for rules now a days. But I'm not privvy to 40k these days.

They also don't have as much options as the IG codex has, so you'll miss out on awesome conversion ideas like possessed transport-plane-drop-ship-things. (Dunno what they're called) Would be pretty cool if it had tenticles and what not.

Two Choices:

Plain IG Codex, but mix things up...

Or, if your gaming group/tournament group (and it is a rare tournament that does) allows Imperial Armour Armies, then the Siege of Vraks (1,2&3) is the best bet.

Vraks 1 (IA5) has just plain Renegade Guardsmen
Vraks 2 (IA6) adds in a Khornate Flavour, with some mutants and other fun debasity.
Vrake 4 (IA7 - my favourite) goes the furthest to Nurgleise everything, with lots of putricity!

As long as each thing looks like each thing (These Beastmen Gors with Lasguns are Guardsmen, these Ungors with Lasguns are Conscripts) keeps things well in theme.

Ogryns very easy become "Spitting Chaos Spawn".

Want Commissars?  Why not Beastmen Champions with special weapons and kit to reflect?  You've already got Banners for Standards, and hell, Musicians can be Vox-Casters...

The biggest problem with "an army of counts as" as that Counts-AS is rarely constant and rational across the board.

Hell, Straken is a Chaos Marine with a Darkblade by any other name, as far as i'm concerned.

Be Consistant.  Be Constant.  Be Rational, and let your inner gribbly go!

(This messagebrought to you by a proud owner of 3 Renegade Guard armies, only 2 of them chaos based).

I don't see why shouldn't be able to atleast play at the club using Imperial Armour.
As for tournaments, I'll deal with that when I have to.

Well, the best thing I like about my Traitor Guardsmen using it, is their Leadership...

You can make almost a stock-standard Guard force using the codex (with a few allowances and restrictions), but the Humble Guardsman has a Leadership of D6+4.

And you don;t roll that dice until you need to test...

Yep.  You don't even know how "Ready to Hold" those Guardsmen are until they're tested.

A Vox-Caster allows you to Reroll that Leadership roll, but hey, you're still look at a Leadership of anywhere between 5-10...

Oh, and Sanctioned Spykers that, if they roll Perils, get Possessed by Daemons, gain an inv save, attacks, and Rending.

I can't imagine you'd have any trouble using IAs at the club. So long as you've got a copy of the rules for the stuff you're using. S'all good baby.
