At Arcanacon this year there was a traitor-guard army that used conversions of IG troops with beastmen heads and appendages. And it looked REALLY cool. Like, seriously cool. You should definitely go for it.
'Fraid I don't know what rules or codex he was using though! :P

I echo Carson, really you should have no issues using IA at the club, there are a few cheesy things (lucious pattern drop pods, *shudder* Would rather vs Mephiston in 500pts) but most of the stuff is either fairly balanced, or if anything, overpriced.

With the guard codex you really cant go wrong. If abused it is probs the strongest codex in the current game, next to Space Wolves and then Blood Angels.
When not going for nothing but the kill, it is an awesome dex with hundreds of different options that allow you to have a list of sub par tom-foolery, with a few decent options to have that mix of competitiveness AND theme AND fun for both sides of the table.

Have a look around, figure out some theme to your list, and get an idea of units you like (dont worry about whats strong and what isn't) and we can help you make a couple of lists.
