Fun fact
« on: June 16, 2011, 02:17:40 AM »
Was anyone else aware that Astarte (as in space marine) was actually a greek god associated with fertility, sexuality and war? I thought this was kind of cool. Anyone know any other fun facts about 40k like this?

The plural of the goddess' name (in Hebrew) is also a general term denoting paganism (essentially the acceptance of other deities, but only one is chosen or believed to be the 'chief' of gods, or even worthy of devotion. In a nutshell). Sound like a pit like our space marines now? :D

Im sure most warhammer armies are be based on some type of culture. My ideas as follows:

Tomb Kings - Egyptian.
Vampire Counts - Gothic.
Bretonnia - British - Nobility based.
Empire     - British - Peasants.
Lizardmen - Aztec.
High Elves - Roman.
Chaos - Norse.
Orcs & Goblins - Goth / Germania based.
Wood Elves - Celtic / British...time of Stonehenge, before the Romans arrived.

Anyone else see any influences in army design?

When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the CFA usually uses water.

Space Marines - Starship Troopers
Nids - Aliens
Eldar - Classical high elves
etc, etc.

Another fun fact, 40k is made by GW.

The story/faction designs within the GW games isn't exactly original, nor do they hide the fact where their influences come from. But then neither does Blizzard.

I'm sorry.
It doesn't matter how many or how good you are.
There are too many things I have yet to know about this world to leave it today.
So, regrettably, today it is your turn to die.

i always thought the nids were closer to the bugs from starship troopers than aliens due to numbers and anatomy

I would be more inclined to think that Nids influenced Starship Troopers which was made in 1997.

The starship troopers look more like Imperial Guard than a space marine.

The book came before Nids.

Agreed with Carson about GW not being very original in almost anything, but neither do they hide the fact so It does not bother me.

Although starship troopers and space marines have absolutely no similarities at all in my opinion. The starship troopers are just normal people, not even augmented, they would be guardsmen if anything.
Space marines are super human, their models, and often codex/dodgy black library fluff completely fails to portray the huge, powerful creature that they are. More suited to terminator and bionic woman/million dollar man type references not so much because of regeneration (which they are quite capable of, knife wounds would visibly heal or fail to inflict any serious damage Hollywood style, while anything short of death can be fixed in their med "labs" or bionic upgrades, but their sheer power and unstoppable physique combined with the very best of military training and hardware.
